Understanding Case History and Examination

Case history and examination are the foundation of safe, effective treatment.

They reveal underlying issues, guide clinical decisions, and build trust — turning information into a clear plan for therapy.

This process builds trust while revealing how lifestyle and past experiences shape the body today.

Essential Soft Tissue Techniques

In this section, you’ll move from theory to hands-on application, learning the key methods that form the backbone of effective sports massage.

From setting up your table and choosing oils to mastering techniques like effleurage, petrissage, percussion, vibration, and friction—you’ll gain a practical toolkit to deliver real results.

You’ll also explore the use of different applicators, from fingertips to reinforced hands, and discover how each creates unique effects.

By the end, you’ll have the confidence and skills to turn knowledge into action and treatments into transformation.

Trigger Points

This section provides a practical and accessible guide to understanding and treating trigger points—the tight, hypersensitive spots in muscle that can cause pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.

You’ll learn how to identify common trigger points, understand their referral patterns, and apply safe, effective techniques to release them.

The section blends clear anatomy with hands-on skills, giving you the confidence to integrate trigger point therapy into your treatments.

By the end, you’ll have a proven approach to reducing pain, improving function, and helping clients move and feel better.

Positional Release

In this section, you’ll discover how to use Positional Release Therapy (PRT) to ease pain and restore balance in the body gently.

You will be guided step by step through the principles behind PRT, showing you how to find tender points, position the body for release, and let the nervous system reset naturally.

You’ll get plenty of hands-on practice so you can feel the difference in real time and gain confidence applying these techniques with your clients.

Muscle Energy Techniques

You will learn how to apply Muscle Energy Techniques to improve mobility, reduce pain, and restore function.

Learn how to safely use your client’s own gentle muscle contractions against resistance to create effective changes in joint range, muscle length, and overall balance.

Assess restrictions, apply the techniques, and fine-tune your approach for different clients.

By the end, you’ll feel confident integrating METs into your treatments as a precise and powerful tool to help clients move and feel better.

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)

In this section, you’ll learn how to use PNF techniques to improve flexibility, coordination, and muscular control.

Through simple contraction–relaxation methods that help the nervous system release tension and allow for a greater range of motion.

You’ll practice applying PNF in different ways, see how it complements other soft tissue techniques, and build the confidence to integrate it into your treatments for both rehab and performance-focused clients.

Instrument Assusted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM)

You’ll discover how to use specially designed tools to target soft tissue restrictions with precision and efficiency.

Apply IASTM techniques safely to break down adhesions, stimulate healing, and improve tissue quality.

You’ll get the chance to practice correct tool handling, pressure application, and movement patterns so you can feel the difference between healthy and restricted tissue.

By the end, you’ll understand when and why to use IASTM, and how to integrate it confidently alongside your hands-on skills to enhance your patients outcomes.

Soft Tissue Release (STR)

Learning how to apply Soft Tissue Release to reduce tension, restore mobility, and target problem areas with accuracy. I

You will be guided through the different types of STR, showing you how to combine movement with precise pressure to lengthen and release restricted tissues.

There is plenty of hands-on practice to refine your technique, feel the changes happening under your fingers, and gain confidence in adapting STR for different clients and conditions.

By the end, you’ll have a practical tool you can use straight away to enhance your treatments.

Examinations

The assessment combines a multiple-choice exam to test knowledge and an extended question exam.  These are extended questions to measure clinical reasoning.  Similar to what you might get in an in-person OSCE assessment (just not in person).

This ensures candidates can apply theory confidently in practice.  You will need a steady flow of friends/family/colleagues to practice on.

Successful completion leads to certification, demonstrating professional competence and supporting career advancement.

Course Hours

The Level 5 Diploma is an extensive and in-depth qualification, requiring 400 hours of study and practical application to complete.

While some learners may progress more quickly, the actual duration will depend on how effectively you absorb the knowledge, develop your skills, and apply them in practice.

By the time you complete this course, you will have gained the confidence, competence, and clinical understanding needed to work safely and effectively with patients, fully prepared to deliver high-quality treatment.
